Slim & Proper goes for Gold!

Slim & Proper goes for Gold!

Our family of sausage lovers are celebrating today after our newest creation, a healthier reduced-fat sausage, won a coveted Taste of the West Gold Award. Having entered alongside a host of other speciality food producers from across the South West, the Kernow Sausage Company’s Slim & Proper sausage is the only reduced-fat product in its class to win a Gold Award. Having been established for over two decades, the Taste of the West product awards are designed to promote the very best food and drink made in the South West. These prestigious awards give local producers a chance to gain recognition for their dedication to quality and provenance. Earlier this year, after sampling a wide range of healthy eating sausages, Gavin Roberts and the rest of the team at the Kernow Sausage Company were disappointed by the limited selection of tasteless options available on the supermarket shelves. As a bunch of dedicated sausage enthusiasts, we were keen to take on the challenge and set about developing a lower-fat sausage that doesn’t compromise on quality or taste. Managing director and sausage connoisseur Gavin explained: “When we first started working on the Slim & Proper sausage we wanted to challenge the status quo and create a leaner product with plenty of meaty flavour. We have always said that it can hold its own against more traditional sausages and now this award just goes to prove that.” Handmade with the best lean cuts of Cornish pork, the Slim & Proper sausage contains less than 4% fat and has fast become a best seller with local slimming groups and sausage fans alike. With a growing awareness and appreciation for the value of quality local produce, the Kernow Sausage Company shows no sign of slowing down and are set to expand the range of reduced fat products later in the year. These prize-winning snags are now available to buy at from various local retailers and directly from our online shop as butcher’s links or sausage meat. Cornwall’s Food Festival Highlights

Cornwall’s Food Festival Highlights

With the summertime Cornish food festival season nearly upon on us, we have put together a short guide to some of our favourite events. There are so many fantastic festivals across the length and breadth of the county, all of the brilliant and unique in their own way. This summer its time to get out and about, support your local producers and have some fun!   Porthleven Food & Music Festival 26th April 2014 Marking the start of the summer festival season, Porthleven Food & Music Festival was a roaring success despite the wind and rain last weekend. With a fantastic line up of chef demonstrations, Cornish producers and delicious dishes on offer, a little drizzle was not nearly enough to damped spirits as visitors braved the gloomy weather to support this marvellous event. Celebrity chef Antony Worrell Thompson has been Patron of the Porthleven Festival since it first began six years ago and joined a host of local talent in the main marquee for live cooking demonstrations. Visitors were spoilt for choice with hot food stalls ranging from Filipino delicacies and authentic Japanese sushi to more traditional Cornish pasties and pies. Down by the harbour, the Kernow Sausage Company team were serving up sizzling hot dogs, made freshly to order, to the hungry crowds. With cracking live music from acts such as Ben Waters, Duncan Disorderly and Bobby’s Helmet over the weekend, visitors were dancing the night away. Porthleven has seen its fair share of storms this winter, so it was lovely to see such energy and support from locals, plenty of them enjoying an award-winning Kernow sausage of course! Get the full story at the Porthleven Food & Music Festival website.   Royal Cornwall Show 5th- 7th June 2014 Long established as the quintessential Cornish summer event, Royal Cornwall Show always brings together a colourful blend of fun, farming and foodie goodies across the three days. Equine enthusiasts will be thrilled to hear about the show’s newest addition, The Mounted Games, which will see teams competing in a range of exhilarating obstacle and relay races. Head over to the flower show for a glimpse at some beautiful displays and the ‘Cooking with Herbs Masterclass’ from our friends at Philleigh Way Cookery School. Over in the Food & Farming Pavilion, the county’s proud producers offer visitors the chance to sample proper Cornish produce, from hand-made fudge from Buttermilk Confections to craft beer from Harbour Brewing Company. While you’re there, don’t forget to look out for the Kernow Sausage Company stall where you can pick up fridge packs to take home, along with dry cured bacon and sausage sandwiches. For more information, take a peek at the full schedule on the Royal Cornwall Show website.   Newlyn Fish Festival 25th August 2014 A firm favourite on everyone’s calendar, Newlyn Fish Festival raises funds for The Fishermen’s Mission and offers the public a glimpse into the world beyond the harbour....

5 Things to do in Spring in Cornwall

5 Things to do in Spring in Cornwall

Posted in Blog | 0 comments

We love the spring time here at Kernow Sausage HQ. When the beautiful daffodils start to pop up all around the farm we know that the sunshine is on its way. To celebrate the arrival of spring here in the Westcountry we’ve put together a short guide about things to do in spring in Cornwall. Enjoy! 1. Have an adventure… Spring is a great time to brush off the cobwebs and challenge yourself to venture into the great unknown. Cornwall is well known for its stunning landscape of rolling hills and picturesque beaches, which makes it a great place to go exploring. The National Trust offers some excellent guides to short walks around The Lizard with breath taking views and longer routes such as ‘Hall Walk’ from Fowey Estuary to Pencarrow Head, among others. If you’re keen for a real thrill, why not sign up to a coasteering group with Kernow Coasteering or Vertical Descents and try your hand at climbing, jumping and swimming around the Cornish cliffs. Exhilarating and extremely good fun, this is a great activity that allows you to see the coastline from a whole new angle. 2. Feed your inner Foodie… I’m among those that firmly believe Cornwall to be the foodie capital of Britain. With so many esteemed restaurants scattered about the county, including Paul Ainsworth at No. 6 and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, it’s hard to argue otherwise. On your quest for culinary genius, don’t overlook the fabulous menus at hotels such at Bedruthan, The Scarlet, Watergate Bay or The Alverton, where the food on offer is first class. Porthleven Food & Music Festival on Saturday 26th April is always worth a look with its colour array of local food producers, celebrated chefs and live music. If you’re more into home cooking, flick through The Great Cornish Food Book or The New West Country Cook Book for some inspirational recipes using the best local and seasonal ingredients. My motto is to always keep your tongue on its toes. 3. Revitalise and refresh… Now is the perfect time for a little pampering ready for summer. There is no better way to relax and de-stress than with warm bubbling water and calming aromas. Treat yourself to a soothing cocoa chocolate wrap or a luxury organic dark chocolate facial at The Headland, or an exotic lime and ginger salt glow therapy at Carlyon Bay for a truly indulgent day. You can also get your hands on some goodies from The Little Cornish Bathhouse and Soapery, based out of Mevagissey, for a luxury spa experience at home. 4. Dust off the BBQ… Sunshine is here and the summer is near, which means it’s time to dig out your BBQ and get those coals burning. You can find our Cornish BBQ Packs at various retailers across the county including Humfrey’s Farm Shop in Tregony, Mawnan Smith Post Office, Helford...

Shape up with Slim & Proper

Shape up with Slim & Proper

Want to shape up but don’t like the idea of nibbling on rabbit food? No, me neither. Having launched our Slim & Proper Lower Fat Sausages just two months ago in January, we have been overwhelmed by their popularity both across the county and further afield. Now available as a sausage meat, perfect for making your own meaty treats, our famous bangers have become a firm favourite with sausage-loving slimmers. Because they contain high levels of protein and less than 4% fat, Slim & Proper sausages are also great for gym-lovers and fitness fanatics. Packed full of delicious traditional flavours, these sausages do not compromise on quality or taste. We caught up with fitness guru Shaun Windo from Lifestyle Solutions Fitness Studio in Pool to find out more about how our skinny sausages can fit in with a healthier regime. “As I’m sure you guys are aware, when trying to lose weight, or as part of a weight maintenance programme, a lower fat intake is essential.  Your lower fat sausages are great at providing a tasty alternative to normal higher fat sausages, which means that they can be consumed more regularly. It’s important that people wishing to adopt a healthier lifestyle and in particular those looking to lose weight don’t feel deprived of the occasional treat, so offering them a product which enables them to treat themselves is a great way of staying on track. “In actual fact, a higher protein intake and a lower fat intake are essential for those looking to drop a few pounds whilst providing their body with enough protein to feed working muscles. I must stress though that everything needs to happen in balance, which is why weight loss programmes like Slimming World and Weight Watchers, or coming to a Personal Trainer like myself, are helpful because it’s about adopting new lifestyle changes through great nutrition and exercise not just going on a crazed fad diet that does more damage than good.” With over 10 years experience in the industry, Shaun is a true fitness professional that helps his clients to reach their health and fitness goals by looking at nutrition, exercise and lifestyle. If you’re would like to find out more about Shaun and Lifestyle Solutions Fitness Studio please visit their website. You can purchase Slim & Proper Lower Fat Sausages or Sausage Meat directly from the Kernow Sausage Company online shop. Don’t forget it’s free shipping on orders over £25 so why not stock up and enjoy guilt-free delicious Cornish produce every time! Have a peek at our healthy eating recipes, featuring our lower fat sausage, for some delicious ideas on how to feel great whilst enjoying the food you love. By Samantha...

Happy St Piran’s Day

Happy St Piran’s Day

Posted in Blog | 0 comments

According to legend, St Piran was born in Ireland in the 6th century where he was famous for performing astonishing deeds. Afraid of his powers, a group of kings put a millstone around his neck and threw him into the sea. Having miraculously landed safely on Perranporth beach, he built a chapel in the sand dunes. This brought flocks of Cornish people to the sandy shore, eager to listen to his teachings. It’s said that St Piran discovered tin, by accident, when a black hearthstone on his fire leaked a white liquid. The Flag of St Piran represents white tin flowing from the black rock, or good overcoming evil. Today, people across Cornwall and further afield come together to celebrate St Piran’s Day on 5th March. There are always plenty of events you can get involved with from pasty throwing at Newquay Zoo to the beer festival in Falmouth. Enjoy a pasty, sip a cider and give a cheers for our beautiful Kernow!
